Katherine (Kit) Brown-Hoekstra, Principal, is an award-winning writer and consultant with a background in the life sciences and 20+ years of experience in the technical communication field, much of it assisting content development teams in working more effectively with localization.
During her career, Kit has worked with technical experts worldwide to successfully develop information and training materials for a variety of global audiences, ranging from government agencies to technicians, physicians, patients, and software end-users. She has worked in the environmental, medical, financial, software, and localization industries. Kit holds a Master of Science degree in Technical Communication and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, both from Colorado State University.
In addition to writing and editing web content, manuals, online help, and technical information sheets, Kit has designed the functionality for internal software tools, has designed and developed intranet web sites, has designed and conducted several surveys, and has developed usability tests. She has also consulted with many clients on internationalization and localization issues.
Kit is a Fellow and the current Society Immediate Past President for the Society for Technical Communication (STC). She has spoken about various technical communication topics at many conferences worldwide. As a judge and competition manager for the STC publications competitions, she helped identify and reward excellent work in technical communication. In 2006, she coauthored (with Brenda Huettner and Char James-Tanny) Managing Virtual Teams: Getting the Most from Wikis, Blogs, and Other Collaborative Tools. In addition, she is the former editor of IEEE-PCS News, a frequent contributor to Multilingual, and a periodic contributor to TC World, and Intercom.
